How it works

  1. Answer our online questions – plain English, about 20–30 minutes, no account needed.
  2. Tell your story in your own words – the latest incident, the worst ones, and any police involvement or evidence.
  3. We draft your papers – the FL401, a witness statement with statement of truth, and form C8 if your address must stay private.
  4. You read and sign them. Nothing goes to the court without you.
  5. Email them to your Family Court – we tell you exactly where and how. Find your court.
  6. Attend a short hearing, often by phone or video, the same or next working day if urgent.

Useful to have

You don't need it all, but it helps to know:

  • your details and a safe way to reach you
  • the other person's name, and their address and date of birth if you know them
  • children's names and dates of birth
  • rough dates of what happened – approximate is fine
  • for an occupation order: details of the home, both incomes, and whether the other person has somewhere else to go
  • any evidence – messages, photos, police reference numbers. Helpful, not essential.

Who can use it?

Anyone aged 16 or over who is "associated" with the person abusing them:

  • a current or former partner, whether married or not, living together or not
  • a relative – parent, sibling, in-law and so on
  • someone you live or lived with
  • your child's other parent

If you're 16 or 17 you'll need an adult to act as your "litigation friend".

Staying safe online

  • The form is sent over an encrypted connection.
  • Your answers are not saved on your device as you go.
  • We contact you only in the ways you say are safe.
  • Press Quick exit, or Escape three times, to leave instantly.
  • A private or incognito window helps; clear your history afterwards if someone checks your device.

Urgent cases

Tick that it's urgent and we put your application first. Your papers will ask the court to act without notice, so the other person isn't warned. Courts often deal with these the same or next working day – see emergency orders.

Yes. Answer our questions and we draft your FL401, statement and C8 free. You then sign them and send them to the Family Court, usually by email.

Is there any charge?

No – there's no court fee for these orders, and our help is free.

Can I do it on my phone?

Yes, the form works on phones, tablets and computers.

How long does it take?

The questions take about 20–30 minutes. Urgent orders are often made the same or next working day after the court gets your papers.

Do I need a solicitor?

No. If you qualify for legal aid, a solicitor can represent you free – see legal aid for domestic abuse.
